IHE-based image management – long-term experience with implementation and operation

Exchanging medical data is a decisive factor in patient treatment, in order to avoid duplicate examinations and to accelerate the treatment process.

Despite major technological advances, it remains a challenge to exchange patient data in an intersectoral environment while maintaining the full control over the process.

A recently published field report in the International Journal of Computer Assisted Radiology and Surgery, deals with the successful implementation of a standardized, privacy-compliant image distribution as part of an electronic health record. This is an actual project of CHILI GmbH, a subsidiary of NEXUS AG. Within the project, a sharing system was set up based on easily available IHE profiles around XDS during a five years period.

The authors of the paper conclude: “A state of the art sharing system that is used in a productive clinical environment has been established and is ready to grow with additional partners. The system is the basis for the interdisciplinary cooperation, in which data, especially images, can now be exchanged reliably and quickly between doctors.”
